foampumpI am eliminating more and more “purchased” products to ones that I can make at home with simple, natural ingredients. I use Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap for my hand soap and spray cleaner so it was a natural base for gentle, homemade, vegan face soap. I love this formula; it leaves my skin feeling clean, but not dry, and I apply my face moisturizer after washing for great healthy skin!

  • 1/2 cup distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon of Dr. Bronner’s baby mild liquid soap
  • 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin
  • 12 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops of tea tree essential oil

Put all of the ingredients in a foaming hand soap container and shake. For the first week, I shake this before using it, but then it stays mixed.

You can adjust the formula to meet your skin needs. Increase the soap for oily skin. Increase the glycerin for dry skin and/or add a few drops of jojoba oil.

  1. Hi there,

Do you think this cleanser would work to remove makeup? I would love to have something all-natural for my face, but it seems difficult to find!

    Thanks!

  2. I only use foundation and this soap removes that well. I am not sure about other kinds of makeup.

  3. I just made this cleanser and so far I love it. I washed my face with the cleanser then I used brewed green tea as a toner then I used your recipe for the face moisturizer. (I left out the aloe and replaced with distilled water so far so good) Thanks again for the great recipes.

  4. Christy – Happy to hear that you are enjoying the cleanser. I have used it every day for well over a year with good results. I like the idea of using green tea as a toner, I will have to try that. Thanks for the comments.

  5. I tried this recipe (left out the lavender EO) but I don’t feel it cleans my pores deep enough. The foam I pumped out feels too liquid. Should I add more soap? Would more glycerin thicken it up?

  6. Cindy – What kind of foamer pump did you use? I have made this same formula for several years and have always been pleased with the thick foam consistency. I use Bath and Body Works foaming hand soap pumps (friends and family save them for me), and I think they are the best foamers.

  7. Hello

I came across you receipe for this soap and was wondering if it can be used on dry skin as I’ve tried using a couple of drops of Dr Bonner’s with water and it dried my skin out.

  8. Dr. Bronner’s can be drying. For dry skin, I would try increasing the glycerin, adding oil, or decreasing the soap amount. You could try the following:
    * 1/2 cup distilled water
    * 1 tablespoon of Dr. Bronner’s baby mild liquid soap
    * 2 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin
    * 1 teaspoon of almond, avocado, or jojoba oil
    * 12 drops of lavender essential oil

  9. Thank you I am going to give it a go.

  10. Kari ~ I know you posted the makeup remover question a while ago but incase you haven’t found anything yet, I just read up on Coconut Oil and even though I haven’t personally tried it yet, many others are saying that it’s a great makeup remover, even removing waterproof eye makeup!

Hope that helps you in your search for something natural :)

  11. Just want to say thanks for the receipe for the soap. It seems to be working well, you should do a video for You Tube as I searched and searched for a good receipe and eventually came across yours.

  12. Elaine – glad to hear the recipe is working for you. Ha, ha, you tube videos could be fun. :)

  13. From reading the comments, di someone replace the distilled water with aloe vera and if so is this a good idea?

  14. I think half water and half aloe for the liquid amount would be a great variation for dry skin. Also, I do not use distilled water any more, just filtered tap water. :)

  15. Hi,
I just tried your face soap. I don’t know but its not liquid. It doesn’t come out of the pump. Is there a way I can fix it?

  16. Palak – that is very strange. It should be liquid. All the ingredients are liquid. I am sorry that I don’t have any suggestions.
