In July I posted a recipe for the deodorant that I use and promised to post the extra strength recipe that I make for my very active husband. This deodorant works super well for him.

  • 4 tablespoons distilled water
  • 4 tablespoons witch hazel
  • 4 tablespoons aloe gel (not jelly, the kind that is drinkable, but not juice)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerine
  • 2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 18 drops patchouli essential oil
  • 12 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 12 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 12 drops lavender essential oil
  • 6 drops of bergamot essential oil

Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle (preferably glass). Spray generously on your armpits, rub in with your hands, and apply one more squirt for good measure. Allow to dry before dressing.

Awesome!!! Not only does a recipe for homemade deodorant show up in my feed reader this morning–I’m transitioning to all natural and homemade products as I use up my old conventional chemical crap–BUT it’s also accompanied by a picture of a dude bouldering! If this keeps me from smelling like an unwashed butt crack smeared with rotted beef after a day at the crags, I will seriously love you forever. Um. Ok that sounds creepy. ;-)

Any suggestions for essential oils that are more “feminine”? I am not a dude and I don’t like patchouli or eucalyptus.

Also, I have heard that alcohol is great in deodorants. What if I substituted the water with alcohol?

  2. I can recommend my deodorant recipe (click here) for a more feminine scent, and for extra strength use 1 teaspoon of baking soda instead of the 1/2 teaspoon (note that the girl recipe is for a smaller batch). I think that alcohol is generally produced from coal or petroleum, and it strips your skin of important oils so I try to avoid it. But maybe it works well, let me know.

Kathy, thanks! I love both lavender and sweet orange. The two together might be nice!

I never use anything with alcohol on my face or scalp, as the skin above my neck is more sensitive than the rest of my body. I think that under my arms might be less of an issue. I’ll try it without the alcohol, and if that doesn’t work maybe I’ll consider adding it.

I’ll let you know how things go. :-) Thanks again for the recipe. Your blog is great.

Great recipe! I’ve simplified mine with just witch hazel and baking soda, and I put it into a tiny spray bottle. Works great!

I had trouble dissolving the baking soda enough so that it wouldn’t clog up the spayer. Any ideas?

  6. This recipe requires a powerful spray bottle. Misters don’t work. Try a cleaning bottle with adjustable nozzle.

  7. Hi,

What type of witch hazel do you use? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_hazel_(astringent)

    Hydrolats?

    Thanks!

Any place you recommend where I could order all essential oils on the internet or in canada?

  8. Hi Thierry, I use the regular witch hazel that you can get at the supermarket or drug store. I did not realize there were different kinds. I buy my essential oils from Mountain Rose (http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/).

  9. Is it possible to put this in a “roll on” applicator?
    Thanks!

  10. Hi Thierry – We tried using a roll on container once, but it got very clogged with the baking soda and did not roll correctly. It would be worth trying again tho, maybe different roll on containers work differently, just like some spray bottles work better than others.
